Smile more with dental implants from Columbus implant dentist Dr. Walt Mick. Although there are other options for tooth replacement, nothing can match dental implants for longevity, stability and appearance. Dental implants are comprised of a small titanium post that is surgically embedded in your jawbone and a tooth restoration—porcelain crown, bridge or denture—that is attached to the implant. An implant restores your smile, your ability to chew and talk, and even stimulates healthy new bone growth so the shape of your jaw and face are maintained. However, you need adequate bone density to place the implant in the first place. If you happen to need to replace a tooth in the upper rear portion of your mouth, then Columbus implant dentist Dr. Mick may recommend a bone graft procedure through your sinus cavity.

Dental Implants in Columbus

The process of receiving one or more dental implants begins with minor oral surgery. Dr. Mick makes a small incision in your gum tissue in order to reveal the bone. Then, a titanium post is surgically positioned in your jaw. Healing from this phase of the procedure takes anywhere from three to six months. During this time, the biocompatible implant and the surrounding bone tissue fuse together to form a secure anchor for your eventual tooth replacement. Bone holds the implant in place and the implant stimulates healthy new bone growth.

But without sufficient bone density, this integration may fail to occur. People who have been missing teeth for a while may have already lost bone, which can therefore reduce the likelihood of a successful implantation.

Sinus Surgery and Bone Growth

Bone graft surgery may be an option if you require additional bone volume before dental implants. During this procedure, bone from elsewhere in your body—such as your chin—or cadaver bone can be placed at the location where you need an implant.

If the dental implant is required for one of your upper molars, then Dr. Mick can access the sinus cavity to grow additional bone. With the aid of digital x-rays and 3D scans, this space is accessed through your mouth and a bone graft is inserted between the floor of the sinus and the sinus membrane. The procedure usually takes no more time than placing a dental filling and is completed under a local anesthetic.

After you’ve healed, the space is checked under x-rays to see if there is now adequate bone density. If yes, then you are ready to begin the process of having dental implants.
