Hybrid Dentures Offer Security and a Smile

So you’ve decided to get dentures to replace your missing teeth. Good decision. Now, the only question is what kind of dentures? You’re probably familiar with traditional dentures that rest snugly on top of your gums. But did you also know that dentures could be attached to dental implants for a more secure fit? Called hybrid dentures, these combine the security of dental implants with the convenience and attractive appearance of fixed dentures.

Hybrid Dentures in Detail

Hybrid dentures are implant-supported prostheses that are used when all of the teeth along the gum ridge are missing. They can be used to replace teeth along either the top or lower jaw. Hybrid dentures are attached to several dental implants that are strategically positioned along the jaw. Unlike traditional dentures that are easily removable, hybrid dentures can only be removed by your dentist. Most patients find that these dentures are more comfortable because they feel more like natural teeth.

Receiving Hybrid Dentures

Before placing hybrid dentures, a complete oral examination is required. Your dentist will look for signs of gum disease and jawbone deterioration, both of which could have a harmful effect on the healing process after oral surgery. Similarly, your medical history will also be evaluated. There are certain health conditions, such as diabetes, that can also slow the healing process.

After this evaluation, you’ll return to your dentist who will position the dental implants along your jaw. Each one is made of titanium, a type of metal that integrates well with human bone and tissue. Once in place, a set of temporary dentures will be attached to the implants. These ensure your ability to eat, talk and smile while the implants and surrounding bone fuse together. This process, called osseointegration usually takes between six and eight months.

After this time—and when your dentist is certain that there’s no sign of infection and the implants are firmly set in your jaw—the hybrid dentures are fixed in place.

Caring for Hybrid Dentures

Because your dental implants are supporting fixed dentures, you will clean and care for them just as you do your natural teeth. Brush and floss daily and be sure to schedule regular dental checkups.
