Invisalign is often advertised as a great way to improve your smile’s aesthetics — and it is certainly that. However, there is so much more to it. Invisalign can address a number of oral health problems. In some cases, fixing TMJ with Invisalign is even a possibility. Let’s talk about what causes TMJ symptoms and how orthodontic treatment might be able to help you find long-lasting relief from jaw pain.

What Causes TMD?

TMJ dysfunction, which may also be called TMJ disorder or just TMD, is a complex problem that afflicts the joint that connects the lower jaw to the upper jaw. TMD can have a number of different causes, including injury, stress, muscular strain, and persistent teeth grinding. Sometimes, the cause remains a mystery.

Commonly, though, the culprit behind TMD boils down to malocclusion (a misaligned bite). If your upper and lower teeth do not work together as they should, your TMJ must put forth extra effort to help you chew and speak. The extra stress it is under can cause pain in the joint and the surrounding tissues. You might also experience a wide range of other symptoms, including headaches, neckaches, and more.

Invisalign and TMD

When it first hit the market, Invisalign was purely a treatment for moving teeth. Now, though, it is capable of both shifting the teeth and helping the lower jaw to rest in its proper position. Therefore, it is a suitable treatment for many cases of malocclusion. Your aligners, perhaps along with some accessories, will help to bring your oral structures into harmony. Following your Invisalign treatment, it is possible that your TMD symptoms will be much less severe. They could even disappear altogether.

Of course, it is important to note that Invisalign is not a one-size-fits-all cure for every case of TMD or malocclusion. After your dentist has a chance to learn about your symptoms and examine your mouth, they will recommend the best treatment for you. If Invisalign might not be an appropriate way to address your TMD, they might recommend a different treatment for you, such as an occlusal splint or at-home remedies.

What to Expect with Invisalign Treatment for TMD

When you attend your Invisalign consultation, your dentist will give you straightforward guidance on what to expect throughout your time with your aligners. A few patients find that their TMD symptoms temporarily get worse when they are wearing Invisalign. If that happens to you, let your dentist know so you can work together to find a solution.

TMD is a serious problem that can have big consequences for your everyday life. Fortunately, Invisalign or other treatments may be able to help you find long-lasting relief from your symptoms!
