personal protective equipment worn by dentist in Reynoldsburg, OHThroughout America’s battle with COVID-19, it has always been understood that, eventually, the country would need to re-open. In addition to allowing you to once again go back to work and shop, it means that you can receive the regular dental care you need to maintain healthy teeth and gums. As a means of helping to slow the spread of COVID-19, you can expect to see some changes when you visit your dentist in Reynoldsburg, OH. You’ll notice him or her wearing a facial shield, but why? Read on to find out.

Three Main Ways That COVID-19 Enters the Body

A respiratory virus, COVID-19 can enter the body and make its way to the lungs through three entry points: the eyes, nose and mouth. That means that splashes, sprays and spatter of body fluids can leave medical professionals vulnerable to being infected. Thus, you should become accustomed to seeing your dentist and staff wearing a facial shield when administering care.

This is not just to protect them, though. The added measure of safety will better ensure that they don’t transmit the virus to visiting patients.

Rigorous Design Standards for Increased Safety

To maintain a level of congruency, the majority of eye and face protection currently used in the U.S. is designed, tested and manufactured in accordance with guidelines issued by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA).

Here are the major structural components:

  • Visor – Also referred to as a lens or window, made from a combination of durable clear plastics that allow the dentist to see clearly while providing an effective safety barrier
  • Frame – Made from lightweight plastics, comes in a variety of styles, all designed to secure the visor at a safe distance from the health professional’s face
  • Suspension Systems – Includes plastic headbands that are adjustable for comfort by a ratchet mechanism, pin-lock system or Velcro®, or can come as a non-adjustable option

Additional Safety Precautions

Along with wearing a facial shield, you may notice your dentist and staff also outfitted in a mask and protective eyewear, which isn’t uncommon. These protective measures, in addition to wearing a facial shield, will help to prevent a future outbreak.

Because dental professionals have always been ahead of the pack when it comes to infection prevention, they are well suited to make the necessary adjustments post COVID-19. As you prepare to regain some normalcy in your life, it’s good to know that your local dentist and staff are ready to make it a safe and smooth transition.
